Infinite Becomings
13th April - 11th May 2021
NCAD Gallery
Infinite Becomings began as a process, a pre-existing method of working, framed by the writing of Peter Osborne. Within Infinite Becomings we prioritise growing ‘processes’ over the finished forms of ‘objects’; process being method and continuation. It is incomplete and in motion. Each idea becomes a fragment; an initial ‘finite form’ that is an origin to an ‘infinite’ growth of multiplicities. By valuing the artwork as a process over an object these incomplete fragments manifest into an ‘artistic process of infinite becomings’¹. This conceptual framework nurtures our influx practices and adaptations to making during the Covid-19 pandemic. It nourishes our collaborative processes where, through discussions, a fragment becomes remixed and remade into layers and layers and layers of infinite becomings.

This collective process/state of becoming manifests itself both physically and digitally as an exhibition, a publication, a public post project, a digital archive, augmented reality filters, and a podcast series.
exhibition

The project physically manifests itself as a collection of fragments - floating frames, glitching images, quiet light, living terrariums, lost statues, and sculptural poems - forming a collective installation which inhabits the gallery space. Fragments connect with other fragments, coalescing into one, a collective ‘state of becoming’², an exhibition as notebook.
publication

Layers, layers, layers of infinite becomings provides an insight into the creative processes behind artworks; emphasising thoughts and ideas in flux, ‘in a state of infinite becoming’. It was produced to bring viewers a more tangible and intimate experience of the exhibition while the gallery remained closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
augmented reality

Augmented reality filters allow visuals and sounds to appear over physical works while using a smartphone, revealing a digital layer of development behind fragments/works. The AR filters could be used with images in the exhibition, and can still be used with images in the Infinite Becomings digital archive (-image-object-fragment-), and over images in the Layers, Layers, Layers of Infinite Becomings publication.

public post project

Members of the public were invited to engage in the process of ‘infinite becoming’ through the Infinite Becomings post project. Participants respond to the postcard and forward it on, the receiver then responding to what they have received in the post, and sending it on again. This creates a chain of responses, the postcard existing in a state of ‘infinite becoming’ as it is continually added to.
