Jane Tonra works largely with analogue photography and installation to explore ideas of what the photograph exists as. She is interested in the encounter that takes place between us and a photograph, and our relationship with the digital image in its ubiquity.

Much of her work focuses on capturing moments of light in space; highlighting the unnoticed spectacular in the everyday. The temporal and fleeting nature of these moments demand pause, and the manual process of analogue photography demands the same. Through seeking out these moments, practicing stillness in capturing them, and creating installation scenarios that heighten the encounter, Jane’s hope is the stillness and pause her practice provides for her, translates with the audience.
